Trimming & Pruning
Pruning is the removal of a branch from a tree. All pruning done by Southern Illinois Arbor Pros is performed to achieve specific objectives. No more than 1/4 of the live crown of large trees should be pruned in a given year. Ideally a pruned tree should have branches distributed throughout the upper 2/3 of the crown. The main objective when pruning a tree is improved health and structure of the tree. The trained arborists at Southern Illinois Arbor Pros take care to meet these objectives every time they trim a tree. Additionally, we can perform tree removal and pruning any time of year including winter. Dead wood can be identified by the absence of live buds which are formed during the previous growing season. For this reason a good arborist can often identify dead wood better in the fall and winter when the leaves are not blocking their view.
Hazard Reduction Prune
The goal is to help reduce the danger to a specific target caused by visibly defined hazards in a tree.
Maintenance Prune
The goal is to maintain and/or improve the health and structure of the tree, and usually includes Hazard Reduction Pruning.
Training Prune
The removal of certain branches in younger trees to help establish a central leader. This may require many seasons on some larger trees.
Thinning
The removal of specific interior branches, usually includes the reduction of some upper crown branches to increase airflow and decrease shade on lower branches
Crown Restoration
Often includes all of the above, and is performed on neglected, damaged or previously topped trees. The objective is to re-establish proper crown structure. This will usually take many seasons depending on if there are large corrections to make.
Crown Raising
The removal of many lower branches to allow for clearance over road traffic, sidewalk traffic, buildings, or power lines. Standard clearances are 10 feet over sidewalks or roofs and 15 feet of clearance over streets.
Crown Cleaning
Removal of dead and/or broken branches. Industry standards specify that dead or broken limbs 2” in diameter and larger be removed. We remove deadwood 1-1.5” in diameter and larger as well as smaller dead twigs within our path
Reduction Cut
The removal of a dominant branch back to a lateral branch at least 1/3 its size
Vista Pruning
The removal of branches from one or more trees to obtain a better view
